SMMASH Fest Information

More Info Than You Can Shake a Stick At
Bursting with questions? We thought you might be, so instead of just boring you with a bunch of useless information about SMMASH and those behind the festival, we invite you to read our little Q & A session with veteran question-asker, J.Q. Public.

Q: How do I get to SMMASH???

A: Visit the Excelsior Dock Cinema's website for directions and phone numbers.

Q: What does SMMASH stand for? (I didn't read the home page)

A: SMMASH stands for first rate Midwestern independent films produced and directed by some of the finest Midw...

Q: No, I mean what's the ancronym stand for?

A: Oh, SMMASH is Strictly Midwest Movies And Short Hits. And the festival stands for supporting Midwestern independent film and filmmakers.

Q: Who created SMMASH?

A: The Minneapolis-based film production company, Reel Cinema Entertainment  produces SMMASH. This the fourth year of SMMASH's existence, the first move outside of the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. If you want to know more about Reel Cinema, visit http://www.reelcinema.net .

Q: What's so great about Midwestern independent film?

A: What isn't? The Midwest has been a hotbed of new, creative film talent for many years and many Midwestern filmmakers have had their films crisscross the world in thousands of festivals and film markets. We thought it was high time some recognized this terrific work locally.

Q: How much does it cost to see a movie at SMMASH?

A: It depends.  A regular $6 ticket can get you inside to see one of our feature films or a block of shorts.  Or you can choose to stay all day for a $12 pass that includes a free soda and popcorn. Once inside the Excelsior Dock Cinema, you can participate in our contests to win prizes (link to page), grab some popcorn and soda or just kick back and enjoy the best films from the Midwest's most talented filmmakers.

Q: What are SMMASH's hours?

A: We start on Friday, October 21st and end on Thursday, October 27th.  Check out our “Films” page for start times.

Q: How will I know what's playing during SMMASH?

A: A daily playbill will be distributed each day at SMMASH and you can check out the 'Films' page to see what's playing in advance.

Q: I'm a parent and concerned about some of the film's content for my child. How can I tell if these films are appropriate for my son or daughter?

A: None of these films are rated by the Motion Picture Association of America, but we here at SMMASH have devised a ratings system of our own which is posted on the 'What's On?' page and is available on the daily playbills which will show what's playing.

Q: I'm a Midestern filmmaker....

A: Good for you.

Q: Uh, thanks....anyway, how do I get my film in SMMASH?

A: Go see our SUBMIT page for details.

Q: I hear you're giving away awards. What's up with that?

A: Yup! The "Tasties"! We're giving away 12 awards to films on October 30th. Ten of the award winners will be chosen by a panel of judges while the final two will be chosen by ballots filled out by the audience during the festival.
